Amelia Golding

An old copycat thought she can rip off photos from the internet and get away with it. Unfortunately, they are copyrighted as well.

But an Australian woman has revealed that at least one youthful photo of the singer is not what it seems.

Amelia Golding, a 28-year-old writer, photographer and digital marketer in Sydney, says that Madonna’s face was Photoshopped onto her body and used to promote the singer’s Rebel Heart album on Instagram.

“When Madonna posts a photo of herself to IG to promote her album but it’s actually your body (I’m not joking),” Golding wrote in a TikTok post earlier this month that has racked up more than two million views.

Goldimg, 28, told Buzzfeed that when she first saw the image she “thought it was a joke,” but then she realized it was posted to Madonna’s official Instagram account.

Around the time the photo was originally posted, Golding’s story was published in a magazine under the headline “Madonna stole my body.” Golding said in an Instagram comment on a 2017 post that she sold the magazine the original photo, which is why she’s not reposting it on her account. However, there is a black-and-white comparison of the two photos from July 23, 2015.

Madonna doesn’t appear to have ever responded to the controversy, but since Amelia’s TikTok went viral, people have been criticizing the 62-year-old in the comment section on the May 2015 photo.

“Ridiculous! Pay up to the real owner of that body and stop lying! I now don’t trust any of your other pictures!!” wrote Bonnie Holbrook.

Others called the singer a thief.

Still, other fans have defended Madonna, with some suggesting the singer might have expected everyone to realize the photo was Photoshopped without her pointing it out. Most agreed the editing job was terrible, with Madonna’s head being too large for the body.

Others said the image was likely merely reposted by Madonna, or that her social media team is to blame, as it’s highly unlikely the star would have done the Photoshopping herself.

One commenter identified the original source of Madonna’s face — the red carpet of the 2013 Met Gala.

Golding has also received “thousands of comments” on social media, she told Buzzfeed.

“I’ve been told it’s a great ‘party flex,’ which makes me laugh,” she said. “I told it at a job interview and they loved it.”

Golding said she is a Madonna fan and the song Hung Up was on her “teenage playlist for quite some years,” so if she had a chance to talk to the star, she would “definitely laugh and say I’m flattered.” But she would also let the singer know that she wishes someone had given her credit.

“I tried to reach out via Instagram to her team twice, to no response,” she said. “I think if you’re going to play somebody else’s body off as your own, they deserve to be mentioned. But no hard feelings!”
